Our Story
Turning Interest Into Action
Dealing with the challenges that families face today requires problem-solvers who bring different perspectives and are willing to take risks. Uplifting Arms, Inc. emerged out of a pursuit to empower and support the community, and a desire for actions to speak louder than words.
We were established in 2011 in Jacksonville, Florida. There, we were able to support students in local schools by donating reading materials to students and the school libraries, support young families through holiday toy drives, and offer personal finance classes to local High Schoolers. We were also able to partner with local neighborhoods to provide safe and fun social gatherings for over 50 families.
We have since expanded to the Flowood/Jackson cities in Mississippi and have currently partnered with a local agency to offer reading tutoring services to students who have difficulties with spelling and reading. We are an organization driven by our vision for strong families empowered through education.
Although there are other nonprofit organizations that focus on helping families, our organization focuses on offering programs that will help equip and empower our families to make lifetime changes. It is like the saying, “Give a man a fish and feed him for a day, but teach a man to fish and you feed him for a lifetime.”
Our Founder
Our Founder and Executive Director, Nefertiti Harris was a public school Teacher and Reading Specialist who, through her years of classroom and life experiences, recognized a need for an organization that desired not only to help the family, but to empower each member of the family unit. She is a wife and mom to five beautiful children and one adorable granddaughter. She was born and raised in Brooklyn, NY and later moved to Virginia to attend College. After getting married, she moved to Florida and now resides in Mississippi with her husband and children. Her passion is to help others and equip them with knowledge that will change their lives and help them to, in turn, change the lives of others with whom they interact.
